The phosphorus recovery future of Praktyka
sewage sludge treatment plants
PART II. ANALYTICAL CHALLENGES CONNECTED WITH PHOSPHORUS RECOVERY
Phosphorus recovery technologies may be divided in two groups: Recovery from sewage sludge or leachate, and
recovery from ashes obtained during sewage sludge thermal treatment. First group of technologies allows to recover
at most 40 % of phosphorus retained in sewage sludge. On the other hand formed products may successfully be
applied as fertilizers, after materials sanitation and neutralization of organic contaminants. Phosphorus recovery
form ashes is associated with high investment and exploitation cost. However recovery rate is from 5 to 10 fold
higher, which allow to obtain immense reimbursement. Moreover such concept give opportunity for holistic man-
agement of all solid wastes obtained during sewage sludge management. Ecological legitimacy of implemented
technology may be concluded only after conducting comprehensive chemical analysis, which provides information
about composition and quality of products along with byproducts.
