PART III – THE USE OF GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY TECHNIQUE TO THE ANALYSIS OF
PHARMACEUTICALS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL SAMPLE
A great progress in separation techniques, which has occurred within a few years, means that the analysts have
a number of techniques that can be used for the analysis of pharmaceutical residues in the environment. Among
many available techniques, which can be applied for the final determination, gas chromatography (GC) plays an
increasingly important role. This technique works very well in research into nonpolar, volatile organic compounds.
However, to the analysis of polar compounds appropriate derivatization procedure should be applied. The pre-
sented work provides a summary of derivatization step, the selection of the working conditions, the examples of
the methods for the determination of pharmaceuticals in various environmental samples based on the use of gas
chromatography and further directions of the development of this technique.
