The applicability of ICP MS PRAKTYKA
IN PHARMACOLOGICAL STUDIES OF METALLODRUGS
Elemental mass spectrometer with inductively coupled plasma (ICP MS) offers an unspecific species response,
which means that common elemental standards can be used for the quantification of metal-based drugs. Such
a universal approach (one standard for different species of one element) is of particular importance because the
enriched standard of the investigated element can be used sufficiently, even for methods based on isotopic dilu-
tion. This low-cost adjustment of analytical protocol improves the assay and makes the drug development output
of ICP-MS measurements more reliable without the need to purchase expensive or custom-made metallodrugs
and their metabolites, which are necessary in the case of molecule specific mass spectrometrs. The concept of
ionomics (based on the investigation of changes in metal homeostasis elicited by genetic or environmental factors)
should be carefully considered in pharmaceutical studies and medical diagnostics in future years opening the new
chapter for applicability of ICP MS.
