a tool to evaluate the odour
nuisance of ambient air

PART II.

Chemical compounds present in the atmosphere and causing unpleasant odour have a negative impact on the
health and life of human. All of these substances which simulate the human olfactory system and conducting the
odor perception are called odorants. In order to measure human response to impulsion from the surrounding
environment the sensory analysis methods are used. This provides the possibility to perform a sensory evaluation
and the control of the pollutant emission.
In this work we have discussed a numerous measuring tests using which it is possible to obtain a relevant informa-
tion about the sensory properties of the gaseous sample. The use of psychophysical tests allows an identification
of the sensory impression, determination of its intensity and the segregation of samples this respect. A four basic
groups of sensory analysis groups were also presented, which make possible to evaluate the odour nuisance of
ambient air. This methods include a differential methods (i.e. differential tests), threshold setting methods, scaling
methods and descriptive analysis methods (profiling methods).
