AND CHROMATOGRAPHIC – RELATED TECHNIQUES IN POLISH PHARMACOPOEIAS
The article presents the information on the evolution in the use of various chromatographic and chromatographic-
related techniques in analytical procedures described in a subsequent editions of Polish pharmacopoeia. The
analytical method, which used classical column chromatography, was recommended for the first time in the third
edition of Polish pharmacopoeia (1954). The fourth edition of Polish pharmacopoeia (vol. 1, 1965), recommend-
ed the analytical methods employing planar techniques, ie. paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography
and electrophoresis. It is only in the "Polish Pharmacopoeia V" (vol. 1, 1990) that analytical methods using modern
techniques of column chromatography, i.e. gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography
were presented for the first time. The use of these techniques was also recommended in the sixth edition of Pol-
ish pharmacopoeia (2002). The seventh Polish pharmacopoeia was the first one, which content corresponded
to the European pharmacopoeia. In the "Polish Pharmacopoeia VII" (2006), which was a Polish version of the
"European Pharmacopoeia V" analytical methods employing paper chromatography and electrophoresis planar
were recommended again. Although thin layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and gas
chromatography-based analytical methods were still advocated, the number of recommended detectors for GC
and HPLC techniques was significantly increased in comparison with previous editions. In subsequent editions of
Polish pharmacopoeia, ie. The eighth (2008), The ninth (2011) and The tenth edition (2014) recommendations
on the use of chromatographic and chromatographic-related techniques were repeated.
